Good morning – sadly, Storm Burt has put an end to what was going to be a very special Parade today. It’s the reason we haven’t simply cancelled it, but replaced it with a short chapel service instead.
On the 6th May, 2023 thirty-five members of The Duke of York’s Royal Military School Band were given the honour of playing at the Coronation of King Charles III. Dukies from the school Military Band performed throughout the Coronation from Parliament Square, to entertain the crowds.
It was a great honour and privilege to be asked to perform at such a prestigious event. Dukies from the school attended the past coronation of the late Queen, Elizabeth II, on 2nd June 1953, so it was a very special time for the school in being asked to attend in a ceremonial capacity. The School also escorted the Royal British Legion and the banners of all 6 cadet forces across Westminster bridge.
It was announced at the time, that individuals who actively contributed to the official coronation events in Westminster Abbey and processions, would receive an official King Charles III Coronation Medal. The medal features a crowned effigy of King Charles and Queen Camilla, and shows the royal cypher surmounted by the Tudor Crown.
Only those Dukies who took part in the Coronation Parade are eligible to receive the medal in School. It has taken some time, but I am delighted to announce that we took delivery of the medals in October and wanted to surprise those Dukies on Parade today. Its also fabulous to see 3 of our recent leavers back to receive their medal too – looking forward with confidence and looking back with pride!
