In Memoriam |
Once again I am reporting on the sudden and very unexpected loss of a Dukie, Allan Mayo (Haig & Clive 1959 - 1967). The news of Allan's passing was all the more shocking as like Rick, many had seen Allan recently, looking fit and well, so it is difficult for us to comprehend.
Allan was still very much involved in the school, mainly through the White Rose Hockey Academy. Allan was present at Remembrance Sunday and very much involved in the Dukies' Association hockey tournament that afternoon, presenting the trophies to the winners of the day. Allan was also a regular member of the Dukies' Association panel who meet three times a year, again he attended the most recent meeting on 17th November, as well as attending the dinner afterwards. He passed away less than a week later.
The Principal, Alex Foreman in his termly letter to parents wrote;
Our White Rose Hockey Academy is really taking off and supported a recent tour to the Netherlands. Sadly, the Old Dukie who set up the Academy, Allan Mayo, passed away two weeks ago. I have included a picture of him below as recent as the 13 November when the TDA took on the girls’ and boys’ Hockey teams after Remembrance Sunday. I was fortunate to call Allan my friend; he was infectiously optimistic, came out with the most bizarre ideas and we loved him here. He will be missed and remembered fondly. He was a true Dukie and recognised the opportunities the School provided him, were the reasons he had been successful and wanted to give something back.
Chris Crowcroft also paid tribute when informing his contemporaries;
But for those who didn't know him, he was Haig & Clive 1959-67, a golden boy of bat and ball sports: hockey, cricket and tennis. Hockey would run through his life as a top class player, manager and veteran. He was an economist & statistician by degree and spent 40+ years in the Civil Service, mainly in trade & industry, also in European relations reaching a grade equivalent to full colonel. He next developed a busy profile as an international consultant in social responsibility and sustainability among other strings to his advisory bow. It took him to Africa and China.
He was above all a very proud Dukie, encouraging to all which I remember from when I was an admiring junior.
Allan's funeral is being held in a private ceremony on Thursday 15th December.
